Nigerians Struggle as Food Prices Skyrocket: Indomie, Oil, Potatoes Up Over 100% [Peoples Gazette]

A recent market survey by Peoples Gazette in Mararaba, an Abuja satellite town, revealed a staggering increase in staple food prices. The cost of Indomie noodles, groundnut oil, and Irish potatoes has surged by over 100% in recent weeks. Continue Reading...

  • Indomie Super Pack: N8,500 -> N18,000 (111% increase)
  • Small Pack Indomie: N5,000 -> N11,000 (120% increase)
  • Five Litres of Groundnut Oil: N7,000 -> N11,000 (57% increase)
  • Bag of Irish Potatoes (Jos): N25,000 -> N40,000 (60% increase)

This isn't an isolated incident. Peoples Gazette reports that two previous market surveys conducted in February showed similar trends – food prices have skyrocketed by over 100% since Mr. Tinubu took office last year.

These dramatic price hikes have understandably led to public outcry and protests against hunger in Niger, Osun, Ibadan, and Lagos states. Citizens are urging the government to take action and alleviate their suffering.

The government has made some efforts to address the issue. Mr. Tinubu directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release grain reserves and instructed security forces to crack down on food hoarders. Additionally, the Nigeria Customs Service attempted to distribute confiscated food items, but the program was halted after a stampede during rice distribution tragically resulted in six deaths.

Unfortunately, these measures appear insufficient. On Sunday, residents in Abuja looted food items from a government warehouse. Similar incidents of looting have occurred in Suleja, Niger State, and Zaria, Kaduna State.

The situation in Nigeria is critical. With food staples becoming increasingly expensive and inaccessible, many Nigerians are struggling to put food on the table. Urgent action is needed from the government to address the root causes of this crisis and ensure food security for its citizens.
