A Huge Gap in Recommendations
While the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) branches across the six North Eastern states are pushing for N560,000, Adamawa and Bauchi state governments themselves proposed a much lower N45,000. This massive difference highlights the ongoing debate about the appropriate level for a minimum wage in Nigeria.
Unions Justify High Number
The labour unions claim they carefully considered economic factors to arrive at their figure. Adamawa NLC Chairman Emmanuel Fashe also proposed more frequent reviews of the minimum wage, suggesting a two-year cycle instead of the current five.
High Demands Across the Board
Interestingly, the North East chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) wasn't far behind with their recommendation of N486,000. They justified this amount by considering typical family expenses like food, healthcare, housing, transportation, and education.
Other Groups Weigh In
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) sided with the NLC, while the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) proposed a more moderate N200,000. The Muslim Council of Nigeria offered the lowest recommendation at N75,000.
Government Representation
The public hearing featured both Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Adamawa Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, highlighting the importance the government places on reaching a consensus on this critical issue.
