In a bid to address the growing challenge of food scarcity exacerbated by the movement of food items out of the country, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has introduced a new criterion for the distribution of seized food items. The National Identity Number (NIN) is now a mandatory requirement for individuals seeking to collect food items across the nation.
The announcement was made by the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Wale Adeniyi, during the flag-off of the distribution at the Zone A Command of the Service in Lagos. The distributed items, comprising over 20,000 bags of assorted grains, dried fish, cooking essentials, and more, were seized by the NCS in recent operations.
Adeniyi highlighted the emergence of saboteurs involved in large-scale exports of food items, contributing to the pressure on the country's food supply. The CGC emphasized the unsustainable nature of this trend, posing a threat to Nigeria's food security. CONTINUE READING.....
To counteract these challenges, the NCS has secured government approval to dispose of seized food items at discounted prices of N10,000 per 25kg bag of rice to vulnerable Nigerians. The initiative aims to directly reach members through organized structures, ensuring maximum impact. Stringent security protocols and eligibility criteria have been put in place to prevent misuse or diversion of the food items.
Importantly, the CGC urged beneficiaries to refrain from reselling the items, emphasizing the service's commitment to transparency and accountability. He encouraged Nigerians to report any incidents of misuse or unauthorized resale, assuring decisive action against violators of the program's terms.
