NASIMS Payment Delay Updates 11th January 2024

In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action by suspending Edu Betta, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in response to the recent delay in NPower payments. The delay has triggered speculations and concerns, pointing towards possible mismanagement of funds within the ministry.

The controversy centers on Edu Betta's authorization of a substantial payment – amounting to N585.2 million – into the private bank account of a civil servant responsible for grants for Vulnerable Nigerians. This transaction, as revealed by a leaked memo from December 2023, has ignited public criticism and raised questions about the transparency of financial operations. CONTINUE READING.....

President Tinubu's suspension of Edu Betta comes amid allegations of financial irregularities and breaches of Nigeria's Financial Regulations designed to prevent fraud and corruption in government business. The directive also includes an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the financial transactions of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Edu Betta has been instructed to hand over her duties to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, while a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic of the financial framework of social investment programs. The overarching goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs, eliminating institutional frailties and restoring public confidence in these initiatives. CONTINUE READING......

Despite Edu Betta's defense that the payment was legal within the country's civil service, financial regulations clearly state that personal money should not be paid into a government bank account, nor should public money be paid into a private account. These actions are considered to have fraudulent intent.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, distanced herself from the controversy, emphasizing that her agency had advised the ministry on the proper mode of such transfers. She highlighted that bulk payments should not be made to an individual's account in the name of the Project Accountant.

As the investigation unfolds and public scrutiny intensifies, the NASIMS payment delay appears to be intricately linked to the broader financial irregularities and mismanagement alleged within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding situation.
