FG Approves N5.1bn Grant for Educational Research Funding



In a significant move towards fostering innovation and development, the Federal Government has greenlit a staggering N5.1 billion in grants for educational research. This approval, under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) 2023 Grant Cycle, marks a pivotal step in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's commitment to advancing research and development for economic and technological growth in Nigeria.

The approval, announced by Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, follows a rigorous screening process conducted by the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC). Out of 4,287 concept notes received from applicants since March 2023, 185 research proposals have been selected for funding, totaling N5,128,180,623.63. CONTINUE READING....

The breakdown of the approved funds showcases a strategic allocation: N3,784,635,923.00 for Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI); N759,875,400.00 for Humanities and Social Science (HSS); and N583,669,300.63 for Cross-Cutting (CC) projects. Individual grants ranging from N8 million to over N46 million demonstrate the diversity and depth of the selected projects.

Under the SETI thematic group, projects include groundbreaking initiatives such as developing a national rural water quality assurance plan, creating doubled haploid maize lines for improved yield, and designing an intelligent multichamber evaporative cooling preservative system for post-harvest storage of fruits. Cross-cutting projects range from utilizing scrap tires and plastic wastes for renewable energy storage to developing low voltage programmable electroporators for wound healing and cancer treatment.
