In a significant move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from neighboring Benin Republic and Togo. This decision comes in response to concerns raised by an investigative report published by the Daily Nigerian Newspaper on December 30, 2023, titled "UNDERCOVER: How DAILY NIGERIAN reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks, participated in NYSC scheme."

The federal government expressed deep concern over the findings of the report, revealing that some Nigerians resort to nefarious means and unconscionable methods to obtain degrees with the sole intention of securing job opportunities for which they are unqualified. CONTINUE READING.....

Augustina Obilor-Duru, speaking on behalf of the Director Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education, stated in a release on Tuesday, January 2, that the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria, along with the Department of State Security Services (DSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) will be involved in the investigation.

The federal government's decision was prompted by the revelation that a Cotonou-based university issued a degree certificate to an undercover journalist within a remarkably short period of six weeks. The investigation uncovered potential fraudulent practices in the certification process, raising questions about the legitimacy of degrees obtained from these neighboring countries. The statement from the Federal Ministry of Education reads, "The issue of degree mills institutions, i.e., institutions that exist on paper or operate in a clandestine manner outside the control of regulators, is a global problem that all countries grapple with." The Ministry acknowledged its ongoing efforts to combat illegal institutions, both domestic and foreign, preying on unsuspecting individuals and urged Nigerians to be cautious about patronizing such establishments.

Additionally, the Ministry has initiated internal administrative processes to determine the culpability of its staff, and applicable Public Service Rules will be applied accordingly.

The federal government emphasized its commitment to addressing the challenges posed by diploma mills and pledged to review and strengthen its strategies to prevent loopholes in the accreditation process. Periodic warnings have been issued by the Ministry and the National Universities Commission (NUC) against engaging with such institutions, with reported cases being handed over to security agencies for necessary action.

As the investigation unfolds, the government remains resolute in its pursuit of ensuring the integrity of academic qualifications and safeguarding job opportunities for qualified individuals within the country.
