Federal Government Postdoc Program Boosts Health Research in Nigeria

In a significant move towards advancing health research initiatives in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced the launch of a postdoctoral fellowship program at two renowned research institutes. The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and the Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) will each admit 100 postdoctoral fellows, marking a pivotal step in fostering research capabilities in the country.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, unveiled this initiative during the inauguration of the National Health Research Committee (NHRC) in Lagos. The program's strategic importance lies in ensuring the sustainability of the NHRC into the future. Over the next four years, the government aims to have almost 1000 postdoctoral fellows actively engaged in research. The NHRC, chaired by Prof. Funmilayo Olopade, a distinguished Hematology Oncologist from the University of Chicago, plays a crucial role in advancing health research initiatives in Nigeria.
