President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action, suspending the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, in the wake of allegations involving the approval of N585,198,500.00 for disbursement into a personal account. The move follows public outcry and calls for Edu's resignation, including from prominent human rights activist Femi Falana.
In response to the controversy, Edu denied any wrongdoing, attributing the situation to a plot to tarnish her image. However, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) already probing her predecessor, Sadiya Farouq, over alleged financial misconduct, concerns surrounding the ministry have escalated. The suspended minister, at 37, the youngest in the President's cabinet, faces allegations of approving funds for vulnerable groups to be transferred to a private account, contrary to established rules. The President has directed the EFCC Chairman to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions of the ministry, emphasizing the need for transparency.
Additionally, a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture of social investment programs.
