The unions have cited the following reasons for the strike:

  • The brutal attack on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, by the Imo State Government led by Governor Hope Uzodima and the Security forces in the State.
  • The failure of the Federal Government to address the demands of the unions, including the increase in the National Minimum Wage and the implementation of the new Electricity Tariff.

The unions have called on all their members to comply with the strike action. They have also warned that any Council,Branch, or Unit that fails to comply with the directive will be severely sanctioned.

Impact of the strike

The strike is expected to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy. The electricity sector, the banking sector, and the food and beverage sector are all essential sectors of the economy. A strike in these sectors will lead to a disruption of economic activities and will have a negative impact on the lives of Nigerians.

What the government should do

The Federal Government should urgently address the demands of the unions in order to avert the strike. The government should also take steps to ensure the safety of labor leaders and to protect the right of workers to strike.

What citizens can do

Citizens can support the unions by speaking out against the attack on Comrade Ajaero and the failure of the government to address the demands of the unions. Citizens can also participate in solidarity protests and boycotts.

Conclusion

The strike by the NUEE, NUBIFIE, and UFBTE is a serious development. The government should act quickly to address the demands of the unions and to avert the strike. Citizens should also support the unions by speaking out against the attack on Comrade Ajaero and the failure of the government to address the demands of the unions.
