In a recent development, Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has vehemently disassociated herself and her ministry from a deceptive website that has been collecting personal data from unsuspecting Nigerians. The fraudulent platform, purporting to be a Federal Government Trust Fund portal, has raised concerns about data security and the activities of online scammers.
Rasheed Olanrewaju, the spokesperson for Minister Edu, released a statement on Tuesday, quoting her as unequivocally denying any connection to the fraudulent website. Edu emphasized that the portal was not created by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation or any other federal agency, categorically branding it as the handiwork of fraudsters preying on the public. "The honorable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, wishes to inform the general public that a circulating portal 'FG Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund Portal' did not emanate from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation," the statement reads. "The said portal is fake, created by undesirable elements with the sole intention of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public."
This disavowal comes on the heels of the federal government's establishment of a Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund for Nigerian citizens back in September. According to the minister, the funding structure for this initiative is such that 30 percent is expected to come from the federal government, while the remaining 70 percent should be sourced from donor agencies.
