Are you passionate about supporting aid workers and ensuring their safety in challenging environments? The International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO), a British charity founded in 2011, is on a mission to provide crucial safety coordination in insecure contexts. Currently, INSO is looking for a dedicated Deputy Safety Advisor to contribute to their impactful work in North East Nigeria.

Position Overview: Deputy Safety Advisor (DSA)
Location: Borno, Nigeria
Application Deadline: September 1st, 2023

As the Deputy Safety Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in co-producing analytical and research products related to security and the humanitarian context in North East Nigeria. Working under the supervision of the Safety Advisor East and collaborating with the Regional Analyst, you'll embark on multiple field trips across Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe states. Building and nurturing relationships with a diverse network of contacts will be a significant part of your role.

Your Responsibilities:
  • - Collaborate closely with NGOs, UN agencies, local authorities, traditional and religious leaders, academics, and journalists to gather contextually relevant information.
  • - Monitor local language media sources, providing summaries and translations.
  • - Keep track of open sources for armed opposition group (AOG) and security force (SF) activities, statements, and external analysis related to the conflict.
  • - Identify valuable sources of information, including public archives and reports about North East Nigeria.
  • - Contribute to enhancing INSO's analytical and research products by offering contextually specific insights into political, ethnic, and historical aspects.

Mandatory Qualifications:
  • - Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent certification in fields such as Journalism, Communications, Conflict Studies, Political Sciences, History, International Affairs, Security Studies, or Criminology.
  • - Excellent English writing skills and fluency in at least one of the local languages relevant to North Eastern Nigeria (Hausa, Kanuri, etc.).
  • - Experience working with NGOs and a solid understanding of their safety approaches.
  • - Strong familiarity with the Nigeria North East context, coupled with a curious mindset.
  • - Proven ability to establish and maintain working relationships with key safety contacts in the North Eastern Region.
  • - Proficiency in computer skills and knowledge of Windows and Office programs.
  • - Nigerian nationality.
