Latest News On President Tinubu New N200,000 Minimum Wage Per Month

In a move that could have far-reaching implications for Nigerian workers, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly considering raising the minimum wage to N200,000 per month. The decision comes in response to demands from organized labor in the country and reflects President Tinubu's commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises.

During a recent National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, the Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission presented a plan outlining how the federal government could meet the N200,000 minimum wage demand. President Tinubu, personally convinced that the demand is not unrealistic, emphasized his readiness to address the challenge.

However, state governors have called for caution in implementing such a significant increase. Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has been appointed to chair a Technical Working Group (TWG) tasked with resolving the various dimensions of the issue.

The NEC meeting also discussed the financial implications of the proposed minimum wage increase. The Salaries & Wages Commission provided a cost analysis, assuring that the federal government had the capacity to meet the payment. However, state governors raised concerns about the source and distribution of the additional funds.

To address these concerns, a sub-committee was formed, composed of governors from various states and key government officials. Under Governor Soludo's leadership, a Technical Working Group was established to examine the minimum wage issue thoroughly. The TWG has held several meetings to date, focusing on negotiations with both labor unions and state governments.

The sub-committee's report, including the recommendations of the TWG, is expected to be presented at an upcoming NEC meeting. The final decision on the national minimum wage will then be forwarded to the president as an advisory.

While the specifics of the wage increase are yet to be determined, it is anticipated that federal government workers will benefit from the substantial raise. The fate of state workers will depend on the outcome of negotiations led by the Soludo TWG.

If implemented, the proposed increase in the minimum wage would have significant implications for Nigerian workers and the overall economy. It remains to be seen how the federal and state governments will address the financial aspects of this decision and ensure its sustainability.
