Four former governors made Tinubu's ministerial list

The Senate of Nigeria unveiled President Bola Tinubu's 28 ministerial nominees on Thursday, July 28, 2023. The list includes former governors, lawmakers, and technocrats from across the country. Prominent people who made the list include former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and his colleague from Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Ebonyi Governor, David Umahi. 

The nominees will now undergo screening by the Senate before they can be confirmed as ministers. The unveiling of the ministerial list is a significant step in the formation of President Tinubu's cabinet, and it is expected that the nominees will be confirmed by the Senate in the coming weeks.

The Senate has unveiled President Bola Tinubu's 28 ministerial nominees, and four of them are former governors.

  • David Umahi, the current senator representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District, previously served as the two-term governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023.
  • Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the immediate past governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023, is the Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fertiliser and also the Chairman, Presidential Committee on Non-oil Revenue.
  • Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, served as minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007 under the Obasanjo administration.
  • Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, was a Minister of State for Education under the Jonathan administration.

The other 24 nominees include former lawmakers, presidential advisers, and heads of federal agencies.

The Senate is expected to begin the screening of the nominees next week.

Here are some additional details about the four former governors:

  • David Umahi is a civil engineer by training. He previously served as the deputy governor of Ebonyi State from 2011 to 2015.
  • Mohammed Badaru Abubakar is an accountant. He is the owner of the Talamiz Group of Industries.
  • Nasir El-Rufai is an architect. He served as the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises before being appointed minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
  • Nyesom Wike is a lawyer. He was educated at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
