Dr. Mustapha Sani Sent Letter to Chairman, Commissioners, and Directors of the Nigerian National Population Commission.
AN APPEAL FOR A CHANGE IN THE DATE OF THE POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS FOR 2023, TO BE COMPLETED IN THE SACRED MONTH OF RAMADAN, FROM 28 March TO 2 April.
With all due respect, Sirs. We are all aware that the Population and Housing Census are extremely significant sources of statistical data for overall National Planning and Development.
However, this crucial exercise is scheduled to take place between March 28 and April 2, 2023—the month of Ramadan—when Muslims are expected to begin their 2023 Ramadan Fast.
In addition, the forecast indicates that the North East and West of the country will experience extremely high temperatures in March, with an estimated temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius.
As a result, I truly believed that conducting this crucial exercise during Ramadan will undoubtedly have an impact on the quality, credibility, and acceptability of the census in the country, particularly in the northern regions. partially due to the time and effort required by respondents and enumerators to complete the task.
If my request is taken into consideration and approved, I would be most appreciative.
