Nigerians to submit Phone IMEI numbers to NCC during Sim Card Registration from July

Report from a reliable source reveals that the Nigerian Communication Commission will begin the implementation of the Device Management System (a Centralised Equipment Identity Register).

What this means is that Nigerians will start submitting their Phone International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers to the commission as part of the Sim Card Registration Process.

This was contained in the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration of the commission which has been fully supported by President Buhari.

According to the NCC, this will enhance National security, reduce kidnapping, help in tracing of stolen phones, curtail the counterfeit mobile phone market and also discourage mobile phone theft.

The NCC also said that the policy when fully implemented will mitigate the use of stolen phones for crimes and also generate revenue for the government.

The implementation of a Centralised Equipment Identity Register otherwise known as Device Management System will serve as a repository for keeping records of all registered mobile phones’ International Mobile Equipment Identity and owners of such devices", NCC said.

The IMEI number is the unique identity number of every mobile phone and with that number, a phone can be tracked irrespective of the mobile number that is on it.

What this policy means is that the NCC will have the IMEI numbers, NIN, and mobile numbers of every Nigerian.
