Biden Government Finally Punishes Museveni Months After His Controversial Re- election

Months after being re- elected, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni took a hard hit after the U. S. government imposed visa bans on senior members of its administration.

Museveni was re- elected for a sixth term in the January election after beating his nearest challenger Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

According to the official results, Museveni received 58% of the vote compared to 34% of the wine.

The opposition would immediately reject the results under the pretext of electoral rigging.

President Yoweri Museveni, who has held office since 1986, is faced with a challenge posed by 11 candidates, One of them is a young musician known as Bobi Wine.

Part of the misinformation about the campaign has to do with manufactured content and, in some cases, videos taken out of context.

Amidst the international outcry over Museveni' s re- election, U. S. President Joe Biden condemned the manner in which the January elections were conducted, saying they had undermined democratic power.

In a statement from American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the Biden administration found powerful personalities in the Museveni administration capable of stifling democracy.

" Today, I am announcing visa restrictions for those who are considered liable or complicit in, eroding the democratic process in Uganda, including during the United States. the general elections of January 14 and the election period before those elections, " Blinken said in an official statement.

In particular, the US senior diplomat denounced members of Ugandan security for allegedly committing massive human rights violations.

Museveni has been in power for 35 years and is dealing with allegations of human rights violations.

Shortly after the January 14 election, Bobi Wine was under house arrest from members of the country' s security elite. He was released a decade later.

The latest US decision is a blow to the veteran president who must be sworn in for a new five- year term.

Museveni, 76, is the third African head of state and the oldest rebel leader on the continent, having taken office in January 1986 at the end of a 15- year insurrectionary campaign, started in 1971.
