The ongoing onslaught by the Kogi state government against bandits and terrorists received further boost this weekend. Kogi state neighbourhood watch which comprises of the vigilantes and hunters arrested some notorious bandits and recovered of arms and ammunition in one of its routine raids to rid the state of criminal elements.

Legit.ng gathered that the operation was carried out across four local government areas of the state, namely, Kabba Bunu, Adavi, Okehi and Ofu. The operation followed the state government's renewed efforts in strengthening its neighbourhood watch which has so far complemented the efforts of security agencies in the state.

In Kabba Bunu, hunters deployed on Obajana road with credible intelligence raided a forest in Agbadu area where they met bandits and engaged them in gun duel which resulted in the bandits retreating but dropped one fully loaded AK-47 which was recovered. Men of the Nigerian Army later came in to join forces with the hunters in trailing the bandits and one of them was apprehended.

The suspect is currently helping to provide useful information that would lead to the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.  In Adavi and Okehi, the efforts of the hunters on Saturday, July 18 arrested a 5-man gang of bandits who have been terrorizing people in the area. The gang leader simply identified as Alwaza, confessed that they operate with two AK-47 and three pump action rifles.

According to him, their operations were mainly on the highway of Irepeni, Osara, Eika and Itakpe roads.

He is currently helping security agents to recover arms and ammunition which he said are buried in the forest.  In Ofu, a notorious armed robber terrorising Ugwolawo and its environs, one Uchabiojo Musa  Uchabe was also apprehended. The suspect is reported to have specialised in housebreaking and highways robbery before he met his waterloo recently.

He confessed to having stolen several motorbikes in the area in conjunction with one Abukeke from Ikagbo in the local government Speaking on the latest arrests, the Kogi state security adviser, Retired Navy Commander Jerry Omodara said the security agencies,

hunters and vigilantes are working in synergy on the specific directive of the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello to keep Kogi state safe from criminal elements.  He said the governor had directed that the fight must be taken back to the criminals' dens and hideouts.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Governor Bello warned that his administration would deal ruthlessly with all criminal elements in the state, adding that he would not negotiate with bandits under any guise.

The governor made the statement at the Northcentral Security Summit held in Lafia, Nasarawa state earlier this year. Governor Bello said with the cooperation of the security agencies, traditional rulers and citizens of the state, the Kogi government dealt with insecurity which was commonplace before his administration came on board and it will continue to route out criminals.
