Military sources say Arotile’s killer is a civilian with no driver’s licence

Military sources have revealed more details about the circumstances surrounding the death of flying officer, Tolulope Arotile

The late Arotile who was Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot died in an accident on Wednesday, July 15 - The driver of the car which hit the officer is now in custody

Military sources who did not to be named told Channels TV that the driver who knocked the officer down is a civilian who does not have any valid driving credentials.

According to the sources, the civilian driver, accompanied by his friends, visited his relations at the Airforce base located in Mando area of Kaduna metropolis on that fateful day.


The driver decided to drop off the late Airforce pilot whom he spotted on the road inside the base. But when he was reversing the car, he knocked down the deceased, who died after sustaining head injuries.


Sources said during interrogation it was discovered that the driver of the car, who is Arotile’s former secondary school classmate has no valid driver’s licence. The driver and other occupants of the car are currently in the custody of the Air police.


Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force on Friday, July 17, said that Nigeria's first female combat helicopter pilot, Tolulope Arotile, would be buried on July 23.

TheCable reported that the NAF director of public relations and information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, stated this in a statement issued on Friday, July 17.

He said that Arotile would be buried on Thursday, July 23, at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja, with full military honours. The country was thrown into mourning on Tuesday, July 14, when the NAF first announced that Arotile died at the NAF base in Kaduna state from a road traffic accident.


In another report, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, has said that it does not accept that the tragic death of Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot, Tolulope Arotile, is an accident.

The group in a statement issued by Yinka Odumakin, the national publicity secretary, said it will believe that Arotile’s death was an accident when a coroner’s inquest says so,

New Telegraph reported. The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization is now demanding a coroner’s inquest to confirm how the 24-year-old died and how an attempted stop and greet could have a deadly impact.
